Lauren Garner has been a cornerstone of the Clemmons community for over two decades, serving as the Director of Education at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church.
Her journey into education and faith-based service was deeply influenced by her upbringing.
Raised in a family where attending mass and volunteering were integral, Lauren's parents instilled in her and her three siblings the importance of giving back.
Whether it was participating as a Eucharistic minister, assisting with fundraising, or preparing meals for those in need, the Garner household exemplified a life of service.
Beyond her church activities, Lauren had a profound love for the outdoors.
She often spent her time boating and camping, finding solace on the water.
"I loved being outside," Lauren recalls.
"There was something calming about being on the water.
My parents always encouraged us to stay active too."
Her enthusiasm for sports extended to cheerleading, which allowed her to support and engage with football and basketball throughout high school.
When it came time for college, Lauren sought a balance between independence and proximity to her close-knit family.
She chose Stetson University, a smaller institution known for its teaching program, located about three and a half hours from home.
"It was close enough to drive home but far enough to gain some independence," she explains.
Lauren majored in English Language and Literature with a minor in Education.
After graduation, she returned to her hometown to teach English to high school students.
"I was just 22 years old and returned to work with many teachers and a principal that had just taught me," Lauren shares.
"It was strange at first sitting in the staff meetings, and they encouraged me to call them by their first names."
During her teaching tenure, Lauren also contributed part-time to her local church's faith formation classes.
"I enjoyed being able to work with kids and also being actively involved at church," she says.
Her passion for education and faith eventually led her to Tampa, where she taught at a Catholic middle school until the birth of her eldest daughter, Molly.
In 1999, seeking new opportunities, Lauren and her family relocated to North Carolina.
She began her role as the Director of Education at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Clemmons.
Over the past 26 years, Lauren has been instrumental in shaping the church's educational programs, emphasizing the importance of faith during life's transitions.
"It's important that young people feel needed and known in the church," she emphasizes.
"I try to make sure they feel supported, connected, and empowered to live their faith."
Lauren's contributions extend beyond traditional faith formation.
She actively participates in organizing Vacation Bible School, training volunteers, planning retreats, and fundraising, impacting hundreds of families each year.
Both of her daughters, Molly (30) and Lucy (16), attended St. Leo Catholic School.
"It was always a treat when the girls would stop by and say hello while I was working," Lauren reminisces.
"Even as the girls get older, I always make a habit of really listening when they talk."
Family remains central to Lauren's life.
After the passing of her father nine years ago, her mother moved in with them.
"She still goes to church often and has continued her faith," Lauren notes.
In her leisure time, Lauren and her husband, Kirk, share a passion for being on the water.
They recently acquired a boat and often spend time near High Rock Lake.
"There's just something about being on the water," Lauren says.
Lauren's dedication to her faith, family, and community continues to inspire those around her, making her a cherished neighbor in Clemmons. |
