Grimsley Whirlies Overpower Reagan Raiders in NCHSAA Playoffs

Reagan's Season Ends with 10-3 Record

On a frigid Friday night at Jamieson Stadium, the Grimsley Whirlies showcased their defensive prowess, securing a 24-7 win over the visiting Reagan Raiders in the fourth round of the  NCHSAA playoffs.

The game began with both teams trading early touchdowns. Grimsley struck first with a 7-yard run by quarterback Faizon Brandon, capping a 65-yard drive. Reagan responded promptly, as running back John Evans Jr. dashed 8 yards into the end zone, tying the score at 7-7. Evans was a force in the first half, amassing 95 rushing yards and averaging 6.7 yards per carry. Despite this, Grimsley edged ahead before halftime with a 30-yard field goal by Chase Huellmantel, leading 10-7 at the break.

After halftime, Grimsley's defense took control. They limited Reagan to negative yardage in the third quarter, setting the tone with a sack on quarterback Jacob Smith that forced a three-and-out. Capitalizing on this momentum, Brandon connected with Kaden Catoe for a spectacular 56-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 17-7. The Whirlies' defense continued to stifle the Raiders, culminating in a 1-yard touchdown run by Ty Shoemake early in the fourth quarter, sealing the 24-7 victory.

Brandon delivered an efficient performance, completing 13 of 17 passes for 255 yards, with both a passing and rushing touchdown. Catoe was his primary target, recording six receptions for 107 yards. On the defensive side, Grimsley held Evans to just 40 yards in the second half, effectively neutralizing Reagan's offensive threat.

With this win, Grimsley advances to the regional finals, where they will face the Weddington Warriors on December 5. Both teams boast impressive records, setting the stage for a highly anticipated matchup.

For Reagan, the loss concludes a commendable season, finishing with a 10-3 record. Despite the defeat, the Raiders demonstrated resilience and skill throughout the playoffs.
