BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPIONS! West Forsyth Boys Volleyball Completes Undefeated 27-0 Season to Retain State Title

Article Sub Headline

There is a dynasty brewing on the hardwood in Clemmons, and this past weekend, they cemented their place in local sports history.

On Saturday night, inside the electric atmosphere of the Curry Arena at Queens University in Charlotte, the West Forsyth Titans Boys Volleyball team did exactly what they have done all season long: dominate. In a highly anticipated rematch of last year’s state finals, the top-seeded Titans put on a clinic, sweeping Cornelius Hough in straight sets (25-19, 25-14, 25-19) to capture their second consecutive NCBVA State Championship.

If last year’s inaugural state title was a thrilling breakthrough, this year’s championship run was a masterclass in perfection. With the victory, West Forsyth capped off a flawless, undefeated 27-0 season. To truly understand how utterly untouchable this squad was this spring, consider this mind-boggling stat: out of the dozens of sets the Titans played across 27 matches this year, they dropped only two individual sets all season.

Dominance on the Big Stage

From the opening serve on Saturday, Coach Patrick Shugart’s squad showed the poise of veteran champions. Hough, a perennial powerhouse from the Charlotte area, brought plenty of size and energy, but they simply had no answer for the Titans' relentless attack and airtight defense.

The first set was a battle of nerves, but West Forsyth pulled away late with precision passing and thunderous kills at the net, taking it 25-19. In the second set, the Titans turned up the defensive pressure, frustrating Hough’s hitters and cruising to a 25-14 win. By the third set, the championship momentum was an unstoppable green-and-gold wave. West Forsyth closed out the match 25-19, sparking an absolute frenzy on the court as teammates piled on top of each other under a shower of cheers from the traveling Clemmons faithful.

Senior standout Coston Colamarino was named the Tournament MVP after a spectacular performance that showcased why he is one of the premier talents in the region. Colamarino, who has officially committed to play varsity volleyball at Catawba College next school year, put an exclamation point on a legendary high school career.

End of an Era, Dawn of a New One

This championship carries an extra layer of historical significance for our community. This spring marked the final season of the North Carolina Boys Volleyball Association (NCBVA) operating as an independent club-varsity league.

Thanks in large part to the explosive growth and high level of play demonstrated by schools like West Forsyth, boys volleyball has officially been sanctioned by the NCHSAA. Starting in the upcoming 2026-2027 school year, it will be a fully recognized, official state high school sport.

That means this current Titan squad goes down forever as the final, undisputed kings of the NCBVA era. Next spring, they will look to defend their crown under official NCHSAA banners.

Celebrating Our Seniors

While the future of the program remains incredibly bright, this week is all about celebrating the dedicated group of seniors who built this championship culture from the ground up.

A massive congratulations goes out to the entire roster, coaching staff, and specifically the graduating seniors who went out on top: Coston Colamarino, Liam Shugart, Lincoln Stone, and Austin Holabeck. They have set a spectacular standard for West Forsyth athletics, representing Clemmons with class, grit, and unmatched execution.

When you see these players, Coach Shugart, or their families around town or grabbing a bite at the local spots this week, make sure to give them a huge congratulations. They didn't just win a trophy—they brought a perfect season home to Clemmons!

Go Titans!
