Heartbreaker: West Forsyth Falls in Overtime to West Charlotte in NCHSAA Playoffs

Titans’ Undefeated Season Ends in Overtime Thriller

In a dramatic showdown at Lenoir-Rhyne University's Shuford Arena, the West Charlotte Lions edged out the previously undefeated West Forsyth Titans with a 74-70 overtime victory in the NCHSAA 8A West regional championship.

This win propels West Charlotte back to the state championship game, marking their first appearance since clinching the 3A title in 2022. The Lions' journey to the finals has been marked by resilience and determination.

The game was a rollercoaster of emotions, featuring three buzzer-beaters that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Sophomore standout Kaharri Coleman electrified the crowd with a three-quarter-court shot to tie the first quarter at 15. Not to be outdone, West Forsyth's junior star, Kamauri Manuel, delivered a miraculous tip-in at the end of regulation, forcing the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Coleman showcased his prowess by sinking a pull-up three-pointer and executing two emphatic dunks. Meanwhile, West Forsyth struggled at the free-throw line, a factor that proved costly. Another sophomore, Chacho Womack, displayed composure by converting crucial free throws for the Lions.

The Titans' remarkable season concluded with a 26-1 record, a testament to their hard work and dedication. Despite leading for significant portions of the game, West Forsyth couldn't maintain their advantage against West Charlotte's relentless pressure.

From the outset, both teams exhibited tenacious defense, resulting in a scoreless first two minutes and twenty seconds. As the tempo increased, so did the scoring, setting the stage for a thrilling contest.

Senior post player J'Khai McManus-Wade was instrumental for West Charlotte, providing stability on both ends of the court. His defensive presence and offensive rebounds were pivotal in the Lions' success.

The Lions effectively utilized deep outlet passes to exploit the Titans' defensive transitions, a strategy that paid dividends throughout the game.

As the third quarter commenced, West Charlotte ignited a 9-3 run, prompting a timeout from West Forsyth. The Titans responded with a 5-0 spurt, demonstrating their resilience.

Foul trouble became a significant factor, with West Forsyth committing five fouls in as many minutes during the third quarter, placing West Charlotte in the bonus. However, the Lions' struggles at the free-throw line prevented them from extending their lead substantially.

Junior guards Cam Jordan and Kamauri Manuel spearheaded a comeback for the Titans, each converting traditional three-point plays to narrow the gap to 50-47. Another basket by Jordan brought the Titans within one point as the third quarter concluded.

The fourth quarter saw the teams exchanging baskets, with West Forsyth briefly reclaiming the lead. With under two minutes remaining, a strategic timeout by West Charlotte led to a designed play resulting in a slam dunk by Coleman, putting the Lions ahead 61-60.

Missed opportunities plagued the Titans in the closing moments, and clutch free throws by Womack extended West Charlotte's lead. A last-second tip-in by Manuel forced overtime, but the Lions' composure and execution in the extra period secured their victory.

This matchup marked the inaugural NCHSAA 8A West boys basketball regional championship game. For West Forsyth, despite a season filled with historic achievements, the quest for a state championship this year ends.
