Titans Triumph Over East Forsyth in Atrium Health Bracket Championship |
West Forsyth High School's boys basketball team achieved a significant milestone on Tuesday night, securing their first Frank Spencer Holiday Classic championship in nine years.
Competing in the 50th edition of the tournament, the top-seeded Titans overcame No. 6 seed East Forsyth with a 74-66 victory in the Atrium Health Wake Forest Bracket final at Reagan High School in Pfafftown on December 30th.
"It feels great," expressed Coach Marlon Brim, reflecting on the team's accomplishment.
Brim, who previously won the tournament as an assistant coach at Parkland in 2004, cherished this victory as a head coach.
"To win the Frank Spencer as a head coach is something that I always dreamed about getting into coaching," he shared.
This triumph marks the sixth Frank Spencer title for West Forsyth, with previous wins in 1979, 1995, 2002, 2003, and 2016.
"It means a lot," Brim noted, emphasizing the significance of the win in his fourth year leading the program.
Key to the Titans' success was tournament MVP Kamauri Manuel, who led the team with 21 points in the championship game.
"Winning it this year means everything to us and me," Manuel stated, highlighting the team's determination after last year's setback.
The championship game was a hard-fought battle against cross-county and Central Piedmont 8A/7A rival East Forsyth.
East Forsyth led 17-14 after the first quarter and extended their lead to 26-20 midway through the second quarter.
However, West Forsyth responded, taking their first lead at 27-26 with 2:20 left in the second quarter.
Despite East Forsyth's efforts, the Titans maintained their composure and control throughout the game.
"I give our kids a lot of credit. Fought through the storm. East played well," Brim acknowledged.
In addition to Manuel's standout performance, Kam Higgins contributed 10 points, and Anthony Gray was named to the All-Tournament team.
For East Forsyth, AJ Wesley scored 17 points, and Dominique Tshiboyi added 13, both earning All-Tournament honors.
Looking ahead, West Forsyth and East Forsyth are set to meet at least two more times this season in conference play, with the first matchup scheduled for January 27 at West Forsyth.
"It's a great scouting report for the rest of the season when you're going to see them again," said East Forsyth Coach Joe Coulter.
West Forsyth's next game is scheduled for Saturday in the Ed Price Classic at High Point Andrews, where they will face Greensboro Dudley.
"You want to take that momentum and keep going," Brim emphasized, focusing on maintaining the team's success.
As the Titans celebrate this championship, the Clemmons community shares in their pride and looks forward to the continued success of their local team. |
