Down to the Wire: The Daytona 500’s Explosive Final Lap

Tyler Reddick and Owner Michael Jordan's 45 Escapes Last Second Wreck to a Daytona 500 Victory

In a thrilling conclusion to the 2026 Daytona 500, Tyler Reddick  clinched victory with a dramatic last-lap maneuver, securing the first-ever win at this prestigious event for 23XI Racing, the team co-owned by NBA legend and North Carolina native, Michael Jordan.

The race was a spectacle of high-speed drama, with a record-breaking 25 different drivers leading at various points. However, it was Reddick who emerged victorious, leading only the final lap—a testament to his strategic prowess and resilience. This win marked his ninth career victory in the Cup Series and ended a 38-race winless streak.

The final moments of the race were nothing short of chaotic. As the field approached the checkered flag, a multi-car collision unfolded, disrupting the frontrunners. Reddick skillfully navigated through the turmoil, seizing the lead from Chase Elliott in the final turn. This decisive move not only secured his victory but also underscored the unpredictable nature of the Daytona 500.

For Michael Jordan, this triumph was particularly poignant. Celebrating in Victory Lane, he expressed his elation, stating, "It feels like I won a championship." The win was a significant milestone for 23XI Racing, a team Jordan co-founded in 2020 with Denny Hamlin. The victory also served as a morale booster following a challenging 2025 season, during which Reddick faced personal hardships, including his infant son's health issues.

The 2025 Daytona 500 yielded mixed results for the Dillon brothers, who hail from Lewisville, North Carolina. Austin Dillon, the 2018 Daytona 500 champion, piloted his Richard Childress Racing No. 3 Chevrolet to a 24th-place finish after starting 14th. Meanwhile, his younger brother Ty Dillon, driving the No. 10 Chevrolet for Kaulig Racing, started 20th and finished 20th, completing 201 laps in a race marked by a chaotic overtime finish won by Tyler Reddick. Austin had a strong showing earlier in the weekend, topping the speed charts in the second practice session, but neither brother was able to crack the top 10 in the main event.

The 2026 Daytona 500 will be remembered not only for its record-breaking statistics but also for the emotional resonance of Reddick's victory and the jubilant celebration of his team. This win solidifies 23XI Racing's position in  NASCAR and adds another remarkable chapter to Michael Jordan's storied legacy.
